“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don't make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can't take their eyes off you.” - Maya Angelou
Before we dive into goal setting, I believe I owe it to you to share a little bit about myself. I’m sure you’re excited that Live For This Fitness has started a blog but you may have found yourself wondering…who is this blogger chick and why should I trust her?
My name is Loni. I am a fellow BOOMer. I am also a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and a Pre & Post Natal Corrective Exercise Specialist. I’ve been a personal trainer since May of 2016 and was an instructor and health/fitness blogger in Portland Oregon until my family and I moved back to Colorado in 2017.
I’ve been on trainer hiatus since I gave birth to my second son in the end of April so I could focus on being a stay home parent to my 4 year old and 8 month old sons (WAY harder FYI). I started working out at LFT in July and quickly fell in love.
While I do have some experience, that isn’t the only reason you can trust me. You can trust me because everything I write will be for YOU. I want to give you the information that will help you continue to evolve and grow. I want to be the dash of salt sprinkled over the lessons you’re learning from your devoted LFT coaches. I want to listen to you so I can seek out the answers you’re looking for. I am one hell of a researcher and will wade through the piles of false information floating around online to give you the science-backed, peer-reviewed nuggets you need.
I am here for you and your success is my success. So thank you for lending me your ear. Thank you for welcoming me to your community and teaching me so much already. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Now before I walk away into the fog, let’s talk about GOAL SETTING!
As we round the first corner of this marathon that is the 90-Day Transformation Challenge, it’s so important to know what the heck you’re running towards. You need that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. You need to set your goals. If you’re lost at how to line up these goals, then you’ve come to the right place.
Now first of all and probably most importantly, you need to ask yourself a question. If you’ve been paying attention you’ve heard this from Coach Gonzo a few times now, but before you start jotting down random goals you need to ask yourself…"What do I live for? "
What are all the things that give your life meaning? What is most important to you? What keeps you going? Family? Love? Growth? Health? Giving? Maybe a little bit of all of that? Fine tune your priorities and weed out all the b.s. Focus on the stuff that really matters.
Now that your big vision is clearer go ahead and start writing down some goals…well go on…..yes now.
Alright, now you have this daunting list staring you in the face. Don’t be afraid! Stare right back at it! Remember this is just your starting point so stay flexible and know that these goals can always be revised. In fact that’s what we will be doing next. Take your list of goals and apply these questions to them.
Do they cover mind, body and heart? Yes, this is a challenge put on by your gym but it is not purely about your physical appearance. In fact that’s really just the cherry on top. Of course you can shoot for those six pack abs and a round booty you can bounce a quarter off of, but please don’t forget your mental and emotional health.
Again what do you live for? How can you improve your mind? How can you eliminate stress from your life? What have you always wanted to learn? What about your heart? How can you spend more quality time with the ones you love? How can you make an impact on the community? Try to set goals that bring balance to all areas of your life.
Can you visualize your goals? I mean that literally…can you SEE your goals? Have you written them down? Have you put them somewhere you can see them every single day? Better yet have you created a vision board of all the things you are working to manifest? The more you remind yourself and the more you envision the future you want, the more likely your behaviors and actions will follow suit.
*If you aren’t sure what a vision board entails or you’d love guidance creating one you are in luck! We are holding an LFT Vision Board Workshop on Saturday, Jan. 27th! RSVP here!
Have you announced your goals? Ever notice how much harder you push in the Boom Room when you are surrounded by fellow boomers? There’s something about having eyes on you that give you that extra pep in your step. Tell your goals to everyone! Find an accountability partner or group within the LFT community. Tell your family and friends. Tell your coworkers, hell tell your dog! The more people you tell the more drive you’ll have to succeed.
Are you being specific with your goals? It’s one thing to write, “I want to spend more quality time with my significant other.” It’s another thing to write, “I want to arrange a date night every other Saturday and fill a jar with date ideas so we can draw a different date each time”.
Another example is not to just write, “I want to lose weight” but to write, “I want to lose 8 lbs of body fat in 8 weeks by burning at least 500 calories a day, reducing weekly calories by 3,500 and losing 1 lb a week”.
Be specific! How exactly will you accomplish each goal? Are they measurable with an allotted time frame? The more detail the better!
If you missed Jami and Nate Fryer’s talk at LFT I encourage you to check it out HERE. They shared a wealth of information that will kickstart your journey.
Are you prepared for the obstacles you’ll face? Have you thought of everything that may be a hurdle for you? The more obstacles you are prepared for the less likely you’ll be to trip over them. You don’t want to crumble like a cookie when you face…well a cookie. Set yourself up with a plan of action so you know just what to do when that temptation is staring you in the face.
Tempted to hit the snooze button because it’s so hard to wake up early for workouts? Try going to bed earlier even if you have to skip one of your delicious netflix shows. (Yes even Black Mirror)
Donuts are your downfall? Tell everyone you know that if they see you eat a donut you owe them $20. (Don’t want to go broke? Keep that treat out-yo-mouth!)
Hard to not drink when you’re out with friends? Leave your ID at home or maybe even distance yourself from the party life for a while. (I know I sound like your mom, but real friends would be supporting your goals)
Don’t just run at these goals blindly, have a plan!
Do you need help with these goals? Be honest with yourself and know that it is completely okay and probably ideal if you get help from others. Your coaches are here for you, the dietitians and nutritionists are here for you and your fellow boomers are all here for you. If you have questions ask. If you need encouragement say so. One day it will finally sink in that we are always #strongertogether.
Now that you have that sexy, shiny list of cleaned up goals and the accountably to back them up, go for it! Know that you may have slip-ups and that you don’t have to be perfect, in fact there’s no such thing. Do your best. Make the best choices you can as often as you can. Take a deep breath and shoot for the moon…even if you miss, you’re guaranteed to hit a few stars.
See you in the Boom Room!
