“To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow.” - Maya Angelou
We are doing something special for our April BOOMer of the Month! We aren’t having just one BOOMer….or even two….in fact we are having 6 BOOMers of the Month for April! BOOMer Mamas to be specific! Perhaps it’s because spring is in the air and everything is growing and blossoming, but we wanted to honor all the LFT mamas who have recently brought “baby boomers” into the world.
Call me biased but mamas are some of my favorite kind of people. They somehow find a way to juggle everything life throws at them while making their kiddos a priority. To top that off, the LFT mamas do all of this while making time for themselves and filling their own cups first (because you can’t fill anyone else's cup if yours is empty). They are working hard to be healthy and fit while adjusting to the new life a sweet baby brings.
As I said we are honoring 6 LFT mamas, so I will share each of their stories throughout the week. What I'm basically saying is get ready for some ridiculously cute baby/mama pictures!
First up…you know her, you love her, Zach loves her and of course Mav loves her….Monica “MoMo” Gonzales! She’s a beloved LFT coach, a labor & delivery nurse (impressive!) and of course Mav's mommy. I spent a little time with MoMo to find out what her pre and postnatal fitness journeys have been like and how motherhood has been treating her.
Take a look!
Did you train while you were pregnant? If so, what was your workout schedule like?
Yes I did train while I was pregnant; my usual was 5x/week at LFT.
Do you feel people have misinformed opinions about pregnant mothers who lift weights?
Hmmm…in our LFT community, no, but outside of LFT possibly. I’ve never encountered any issues with that, so it’s hard for me to speak to that.
Have you found LFT coaches to be supportive during your prenatal and postnatal fitness journeys?
What has surprised you most about motherhood?
I can’t say that anything has really surprised me, but my oh my, how life has changed! (for the better of course.)
What has been most challenging for you as a mom?
Society puts a ridiculous amount of pressure on mothers. Have you felt pressure as a mom and how have you reacted to it?
Honestly, I haven’t, or maybe I just choose to not get sucked into that. I (we) have an amazing support system (Zach being #1) and I think having that support system, especially with Zach being the #1 person alleviates a lot of the pressure. But at the end of the day, I know we are doing the absolute best we can, and that’s all we can do.
What does it feel like to get back into training after having a baby? (physically and emotionally)
Lol, well, around month 4-5 of pregnancy, I backed off on the AMOUNT of weight I was lifting, so I started going quite a bit lighter than I had previously and I maintained that throughout the remainder of my pregnancy. Coming back and putting the amount of weight on the barbell that I had before month 4, well…that was quite a shock LOL! However, when I finally felt comfortable putting some heavy weight on the bar again (which has only been in the last couple of months), I feel like I regained my strength pretty quickly. Even though I had to be completely out for at least 6 weeks, from a cardio standpoint, I didn’t feel like I lost too much; that came back very fast, but I’m sure that’s largely due to the amount of cardio I did, especially towards the end.
What obstacles have you had to overcome to make that important time for yourself? (or how are you still trying to overcome them?)
Oh man, well these little humans take up like all your time, and then some! So, just becoming ok with stepping away for a little while and not feeling bad about it.
What has encouraged you the most during this postpartum time?
To get back where I was.
What has been discouraging for you during this postpartum time?
Seeing the scale not move since like 2 weeks postpartum. That baby weight seems to be a little bit harder to get off. I will say this, however, my nutrition sucks, so that plays a MAJOR part. The last thing I want to do at the end of the day is cook dinner (I freaking hate cooking), so eating healthy has not been a priority. However, we have cleaned it up in the last couple weeks, and it’s amazing how much better I feel.
Tell me a little about your children.
Well, ya know…he’s freaking awesome! I mean Zach is his dad, so how could he not be! I, of course, am biased, but I think he’s pretty much the cutest thing ever! He loves to snuggle and he’s a super happy baby! He LOVES squash, sweet potatoes, and ice cream! He definitely has his dads energy, this kid is always moving and shaking! And lastly…he’s the best thing that has ever happened to us!
What advice would you give yourself if you were an outsider looking in?
Stop sweating the small stuff.
What are you accomplishing as a mom that has made you feel proud?
I feel like Zach and I have always made a good team (don’t get me wrong, it’s something we have worked at very hard throughout our marriage), but I think together we have taken it to a whole other level and have become an absolutely amazing team for this little man.
What advice would you give other mamas who want to continue training and making exercise and health a priority in their busy lives?
It’s nothing more than making a decision that fitness will remain a priority in life.
What is your favorite exercise at LFT?
Boom bag GTO, DB snatches, and DB alternating swings.
What are your fitness goals going forward?
To get back down to my previous body fat percentage.
For my last question, I’m going to list 5 categories and you tell me what you recommend in each (just let it be the first thing that comes to mind).
Food: Um chocolate, cereal, beer, and coffee!
Music: Country ALL DAY
Book: I haven’t read anything in quite a while, but still to this day, the Twilight Saga has been one of my favs! (Don’t judge!)
Film/Television: Dumb and DUMBER - It never gets old! Tv: Dual Survival (only certain seasons though), Top Shot, The Selection, Man vs Wild, and the ones I can rewatch over and over…Friends, The Office and Sex and the City!
Person you admire: I’m so fortunate, I have A LOT of amazing people in my life…just to name a few Zach, my mom, my dad and my stepdad.
Congratulations on your sweet new bundle of joy and for being such an incredible role model for him. Thank you for showing what superheroes mamas really are and for exemplifying that you don't have to give up fitness to be an amazing mom. Keep it up MoMo! Mav is lucky to have you!
